The Spanish Speakers Association Inc. would like to organise a free, inclusive event for our Canberra community with the idea of promoting Latin American culture and at the same time raise awareness of emotional health and wellbeing during Mental Health Week.
Funds collected during the event will be used towards recovering costs and to help finance the inauguration of the Nation Capital’s first community based Latin American Cultural Centre.
The theme we have chosen for the event is the life of the renowned Latin American artist Frida Kahlo.
Throughout her life and work she was an example of how having a strong self esteem prepares you to face numerous life challenges. The life of Frida showcases our Latin American culture and at the same time provides inspiration to people suffering mental health issues.
Our Latina sister Frida, has a lot to teach us about ourselves. Despite her numerous tragedies, these did not define her. She never gave up instead she tapped into her inborn Latina sense of strength, positive energy and creativity. She shows us how to overcome life’s hardships by expressing feelings through creative outlets.
At a time when women could only be spectators, her self belief motivated her to question social expectations and prejudices.
This is evident in her “orgullo”, her pride for her strong indigenous local women. She expressed this through her daily traditional dresses. She stood up to her own sense of beauty and even exaggerated her features in her paintings. She chose to marry her beloved husband Diego against everyone elses opinions. Her love of life and art as an expression of this is why we are so proud of her Latin American heritage.
Frida is the main character of the event but her life is the result of the culture where she grew
up. We have decided to create an event that gives the visitor a context to her life, where people
can also appreciate all the things that Latin America has to offer. The setup of the event will be
the same as a mini market “un mercado” with an area for stalls where organisations that want to
promote Latin America or that simply identify themselves with the values and teachings of Frida
can sell their products. Additionally there will be an Art exhibition with works for sale with a
judging prize element and an entertainment area where folkloric music and dance will be
presented. We will organise a red carpet catwalk with prizes for the best dressed Frida Kahlo,
mini-Frida or her partner Diego Rivera.
One of the major raffle tickets prize will be a painting inspired by Frida “Homage to Frida”
painted by Canberra artist Mariana del Castillo. Our children will have the opportunity to paint
their faces with designs also inspired by Frida or Diego.
We are calling on all Canberra businesses that promote Latin America or that simply have an
interest in it to come and participate and celebrate with us this unique event. Food, tourism,
handcrafts, music and art businesses are all welcome.
Fitters Workshop is the venue we have chosen because it is close to Kingston Bus Depot Markets and Glass Gallery. It is a well known venue for its art events and because it is located in a very touristy part of town. Visitors come from all over Canberra and interstate.
The event will take place on the 8th of October 2017 from 10:00 to 4:00pm. It is a Sunday and the Kingston Bus Depot markets will be on that day so high visitor turn out is expected.
